Jenny throwing up, from "Wretched"OK, I’m going to come clean.

I’m in Wretched. I’m one of the extras in the back (I’m the girl in the party hat), so yeah, I have a soft spot for this movie. But not just because it’s my one shot at fame (yeah, right), but because I know how difficult it is to actually make one of these things.

I didn’t see the film with all the trimmings until Shriekfest, and I found it to be one of the most disturbing shorts I’ve ever set eyes on.

Yeach!Jamie Andrews is Jenny, a desperate housewife in a controlling marriage to Eric (Joe Bob Briggs in a nice dramatic turn). Eric thinks she’s got the whole world at her feet, you know, since she doesn’t work, but Jenny lives in a torrent of fear, depression and a loss of self-worth. Not that Eric cares and practically says as much as he blathers on and on about himself. In the world Jenny lives in, she has very little control and the only way she can exercise any power is to binge and purge.

Wretched is set at a diner, and we see Jenny over indulge and regurgitate. When she hides away in the bathroom, she narrates the best way to eat and barf and it’s a truly disturbing moment when the viewer realizes the depth and logic of her actions. Clocking in at a little over 20 minutes, Wretched is a difficult film to watch. It's a fascinating and moving account of bulimia but at the same time, it brings this normally unspoken topic closer to home. There's real sadness and fear infused into the story, and I imagine it would be a great film to show women with this disorder.

Jamie Andrews is amazing and she brings poignancy to the character. There are no answers for Jenny in Wretched, but for the audience it presents a candid account of a topic that plagues women all over the world.
