Jessicka Rabid PDF Print E-mail

Jessicka posterWith the film Jessicka Rabid, writer/director Matthew Reel has collaborated with actress/producer Elske McCain to create a work that is brutal and unsettling, yet oddly poetic. Located firmly at the intersection of arthouse and grindhouse, the movie is rewarding, but definitely is not a standard piece of commercial product.

Brad Hoffman (Jeff Sisson) and his cousin Marley Hoffman (Trent Haaga) live in a modest tract house on the edge of the Arizona desert. Marley, nominal head of the household, has his hands full managing his small-time drug deals and keeping Brad in line. They are the very definition of a dysfunctional family. And locked in a cage in the garage is the family’s dirty little secret: the simple-minded Jessicka (Elske McCain). Possessing the body of a woman and the mind of a child, Jessicka is used as Brad’s personal sex toy and pimped out to pornographers for fast cash. When Brad’s sister Abby (Cisiany Olivar) returns home and Marley leaves town on business, events occur that drive the story to its inevitable, violent conclusion. That’s about it, plotwise. Although there is a story being told, there’s not really a traditional narrative structure at work.

Flying Saucer Rock 'N' Roll PDF Print E-mail

Flying SaucerTo quote Frank Zappa’s spoken introduction to "Cheepnis," his 1974 paean to ‘50s fright flicks, "I simply adore monster moves - and the cheaper they are, the better they are." I also adore rockabilly music. And I also adore - nay, worship - Shannon Lark. So, when the chance came for me to review a parody of ‘50s horror movies called Flying Saucer Rock ‘N’ Roll (named after the classic Billy Lee Riley rockabilly tune), starring Shannon Lark, well, let’s just say I jumped at the chance.

It’s 1957 and Johnny Keen (Josh Duthie) is the squarest kid in school. You know, a real L-7, daddy-o. All he wants to do is get through the day without getting beat up by the jocks or mocked by the beatniks. Susie Smith (Shannon Lark) is the cutest kitten in the class, and all she wants to do is have fun. Maynard (Elan Freydenson) is a beatnik, but he’s the outcast of the group, which kind of weird considering the beatniks are outcasts themselves. But, as we will soon see, life is kind of weird…

The Seer PDF Print E-mail

Hey guys, I know you’ve been missing me, right? Sorry I’ve been gone so long. I’ve been away on a journey of self-discovery… yes, that’s right, I had to find myself. But don’t fret, because I did find myself. I was sitting on a barstool at The Snappy Kakkie Cantina in Tijuana, which is weird because although I’ve never even been to Tijuana, apparently I’m a regular there.

But now I’m here. And I have news. There’s a hot new TV pilot making the rounds, and thanks to my personal inside sources, I’ve gotten hold of a copy. It’s called The Seer, and it’s garnering a lot of buzz.

Written and directed by Linda Andersson, The Seer is the story of a psychic named Guin Marcus (Deborah Stewart). Formerly a cop, Guin is now a private detective, using her sixth sense to solve crimes and navigate an increasingly tangled personal life. Called to consult with the police on a murder, Guin is thrown together with her ex-lover, Detective April Reese (Michelle Tomlinson).

PiecesOnce in awhile I like to look back and see what made me such a Horror fanatic.

When I was 8 years old I watched "Pieces" with my Dad and some of those images have been burned into my mind ever since. The tagline was: "You don't have to go to texas for a chainsaw massacre!"  The release date was September 23, 1983.

Slaughtered PDF Print E-mail

Slaughtered coverBrain Damage Films distributes all kinds of horror films―some good, some not so good. I just finished watching Slaughtered, the new movie from writer/director Anthony Doublin, and I just have to ask, "Brain Damage, what were you thinking?"

Slaughtered has a good-enough premise: A photographer for one of those "naked dead girl" websites decides to actually kill his models before photographing them. Hey, you save the modeling fees and makeup costs, right? But this good plot is ruined in its execution. I guess it’s more correct to say the plot is executed. That’s right, Slaughtered is slaughtered. (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.)
